A pet store in northern China sells clothing and other products online in a country that makes most of its clothing and furniture overseas, the leading online retailer said Tuesday.
The China National Pet Supplies Company said it sells pet supplies online in about 150 stores in China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and in Xinjiang province in northern Xinjiang and in the far northwest province of Jilin.
It has about 1,600 stores across China and its website said its online business had grown at more than 40 percent this year.
It is one of a growing number of online pet supply companies in China, said David Chen, an analyst at brokerage CB Insights.
China’s pet supply chain is a vast network of hundreds of thousands of stores with nearly 2.5 billion pet items sold annually, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
The company operates online pet stores in Xinjian, Xinjiang, the northwestern Xinjiang region and Jiline.
The pet supply industry in China has long been a top consumer demand for pets and has become a growing industry, making up about a third of China’s total retail sales, Chen said.
In 2016, China had nearly 6,000 pet stores with a turnover of about $13 billion, according the Chinese National Pet Supply Company.
The company said its sales in China rose 8 percent to $2.9 billion in 2017.
Its growth in 2017 exceeded the combined market for pet clothing and accessories, according data compiled from market research firm eMarketer.
Pet supplies in China are made in China and are marketed in Chinese pet stores and online, but many pet stores lack quality controls.
Pets are not allowed to be sterilized, sold in plastic bags or shipped in packages, according eMarketers data.
